Well, I've submitted what I am absolutely certain is the proper answer, but the auto-response tells me it's incorrect.

I'm certain the occupation isn't spelled with an RE instead of an ER, but I've submitted it both ways.

And sadly, the answer isn't grammatically accurate, as Holmes as already told us IT WAS THE and he wouldn't have repeated those three words again, in effect saying IT WAS THE IT WAS THE (ANSWER).

EDIT:

Ah, okay. There it is.

There aren't 16 letters in the answer. There are only 8 letters in the answer.

That's not Holmes speaking, it's just the place on the page to enter the answer. The answer to enter is found from the anagram but doesn't consist of the entire anagram; as you've surmised, part of the anagram is already there and we just have to complete it.

I'm not sure why the auto-response is telling you your answer is incorrect; it worked fine for me. You're not entering all four words, are you? If so, try it with just the one.

EDIT: I see you worked that out on your own while I was writing my reply.
